English Version

Q:Resurgence

HGC Horizon Clash Championship on the line! Spotlight on the Southeast Asia champion - Resurgence

Heroes of the Storm Global Championship (HGC) Horizon Clash will enter its climax in Blizzard Arena Taipei, with the finals going live on May 18 19:10. The Southeast Asia champion, Resurgence, made it through the local qualifier and will be on the stage of Horizon Clash to compete with Luna Meow from Taiwanese qualifier for the spot of the Mid-Season Brawl in Sweden. Before the game, we interviewed Julian, the coach of Resurgence, to talk about how this team dominated Southeast Asia.

 Q: How was Resurgence formed?

Julian: The members served different teams, but their teams later disbanded or reorganized. Resurgence was created in 2016. This team has carried on for two years because we maintained good momentum and relationship.

Q: Please introduce the team members!

Julian: Zeys and Mirr served our main opponent, then they joined us to make the team stronger than ever. cwCwCW dedicated in eSport, and he competed in the Eastern Clash with us. He’s a cool one, and helps teammates with daily affairs. Yewyengzxck is the core of the team, he is usually the initiator. ZaPpy is a highly regarded Southeast Asian player. He’s confident about his hero pool and dishes up his best performance with any pick. He is also the strategist and shot caller of the team.

We anticipate the best out of ZaPpy and Yewyengzxck

Zeys from Singapore served Soul Torturers and did well

Q: How did they become pro Heroes of the Storm players?

Julian: All of them are big Blizzard fans, we enjoy playing Blizzard games. The fascination differs from person to person, but all of us have played other MOBA games or DotA. Heroes of the Storm has the core elements of MOBA games, and we believed this is a good chance for us to shine.

Q: How do you feel for competing in the Horizon Clash?

Julian: It is a pleasure to play with these great teams. We met many old opponents returning to the pro Storm events or in scrims. This community has reborn, and we hope more events to come.

Q: In the qualifiers, which match was the most impressive to you?

Julian: The Grand Finals with PSISTORM Gaming, of course! PSISTORM Gaming pushed to the match point 2:1 by winning the first two maps, and we had a terrible start in Dragon Spire. We were 3 levels behind and PSISTORM Gaming was preparing for the assault at the core. As they split up to summon the Dragon Knight at the Altar, we initiated with number advantage to interrupt their maneuver and grabbed the Knight for ourselves. That was a huge comeback.

Q: What do you think about this meta?

Julian: In this meta, heroes and compositions can be utilized in the maps they work the best. For now, the picks and bans will continue focusing on Malfurion and Stukov, the two supports of this meta. However, we believe a balanced composition and seamless teamwork is more important than the “meta heroes”.

Q: You’ll take on Luna Meow, the winner of the Taiwanese qualifier. Are you confident of the win?

Julian: Luna Meow is a strong opponent, we must be well-prepared. We watched the VODs of Luna Meow’s matches, so we had first impression of their strategies and play style. We believe this puts us ready for the Horizon Clash finals! We’ll put up the best performance!

Their opponent in the Horizon Clash, Luna Meow, is the winner of Taiwan qualifier led by GarnetDevil, a veteran pro Storm player.

You may also want to see the interview on Luna Meow’s player: The Imperishable Flame of Heroes - GarnetDevil     HGC Horizon Clash Live information Time: May 18 19:00 Location: Blizzard Arena Taipei (free entry) Channel: Traditional Chinese Twitch channel, English Twitch channel     For more information about the event, make sure to follow HGC Horizon Clash Taiwan, Heroes of the Storm fanpage (@BlizzHeroesZHTW), HGC official site, Blizzard Esports fanpage (@BlizzardeSportsTW) and Blizzard Esports Taiwan!

The Overwatch Contenders Pacific Season One is in the books with Detonator KR defeating Blank Esports at Blizzard Arena Taipei. Detonator KR secured the fourth win of the night in Hollywood and was crowned to be the Champion team of Overwatch Contenders Pacific (OWCP) Season 1.   Detonator KR was crowned to be the Champion of OWCP S1.   Excel from teams around APAC region (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and Singapore), Detonator KR and Blank Esports had a final showdown in the Grand Final of OWCP. With the Best of Seven ruleset, the two teams were indifferent in synergy, hero pool, and skills.     The opening ceremony was full with laughters.   This was the first time Detonator KR facing off Blank Esports. In the first half of the game, both teams showed their exceptional knowledge in the game and struggled to take the lead. In Ilios, both teams captured the maps till 99% but Blank Esports pushed it to the last with their strong will. In Nubani, Detonator KR avenged their loss by pushing the payload further than Blank Esports in another tiebreaker. But Blank Esports stayed calm, they successfully won the Lunar Colony map with a tight 6% difference on the map.  By the end of the fourth map, the score was tied with a 2:2.   ieatuup helped Blank Esports to grab another win with a tight difference of 6% on the map.   In the following map, Oasis, Detonator KR took the map and the lead on the road to the champion. Tried hard to fight under pressure, Blank Esports put up a fight to show their fans and opponent – it is still too early to give in. Desperate to win, Blank Esports stabilized themselves and steadily pushed the payload foot by foot. Not until Crong and Blitz’s D.Va self-destruct and Sombra EMP combo wiped the entire team, the hope of Blank Esports shattered pieces by pieces. With the momentum leaned toward to Detonator KR, Dahim’s Black Widow was on fire for almost the entire attack round. And, Detonator KR was enthroned as the new Kings of Overwatch in the Pacific Region with the final score of 4:2.   Blitz and Crong's combo destroyed Blank Esports' dream of Champion.   Detonator KR thanked all their fans in the end of the game.   Not enough of Overwatch esports? • 經過 4 月 27 日的十六強線下淘汰賽後,山下智久(台灣)、katsucurry(新加坡)、MCweifu(台灣)、seogui(韓國)、shipingorder(台灣)、Staz(菲律賓)、switch(新加坡)及 Tredsred(日本)順利進入 4 月 29 日的八強暨冠軍賽。

緊追其後的,是 No Soak 與 Times New Roman(前 The One),新面孔 The Avengers 與多位資深英霸好手組成的 For Second 則各擁一勝虎視眈眈,Green Raza、POSEIDON 和 Crossover 三隊目前則戰績稍微落後。 No Soak, Lisa:No Soak Times New Roman, n6333373:Times New Roman 成員大部分是來自隊伍 The One,這次為了參加地平線對決便決定進行隊伍重組,雖然少了 Jason 與 MVPFujay,但新增了 AlexJuice 和 ArthasKew 兩位香港好手,我相信我們有機會拿下不錯的名次。 The Avengers, Littlewhite:The Avengers For Second, hikari:For Second Heroes of the Storm Global Championship (HCG): Horizon Clash Taiwan has officially begun on April 25th. Throughout the 3-week-long tournament, the quarter finalists will engage in single round-robin tournament games, BO3 games to compete for the chance to participate in the finals.   After the first week's games, Luna Meow (formerly LM) has taken the lead with all 3 wins. Luna Meow is a veteran team that has waded through HCG: Eastern Clash. Though their team composition has changed, but they remain strong. Luna Meow is followed by No Soak and Times New Roman (formerly The One) respectively. The newcomers The Avengers and For Second, comprised of many veteran players, have also each scored a win. However, Green Raza, POSEIDON, and Crossover have fallen behind. Are they able to show what they are made of? Would the future battles change in any teams favor? Let's get on with the Horizon Clash finalist interview!   Q: Please briefly talk about your teams! Virgil, Luna Meow: Our team members are mostly competitive gaming veterans from Team Face Check (TFC), as well as the top Taiwanese player, booy005. In Horizon Clash, our team composition has changed a bit from the last season. Me and Kim returned to the team. Since we worked together for a while back, we got familiar with each other's play rather quickly. Lisa, No Soak: No Soak is a team of casual gamers. We participated in Heroes of the Norm Taiwan the last time, and this time, we entered Horizon Clash Taiwan just to see how good we really are. n6333373, Times New Roman: Most of our members were formerly members of The One. We rebuilt the team especially for Horizon Clash Taiwan. Though Jason and MVPFujay are no longer with us, but we have AlexJuice and ArthasKew to take their places. I believe we have a good chance in winning this. Littlewhite, The Avengers: The Avengers is a newly formed team. We started out recently from Heroes of the Norm Taiwan, and now we entered Horizon Clash Taiwan with the goal of winning the championship. We want to give the Heroes of the Storm some new faces. Hikari, For Second: For Second is a rebuilt team. Our members came from Soul Torturer and LM. Most members have experiences in tournaments, and some even participated in international games representing Taiwan. We're all old friends here, so we're quite at ease in each other's company. Some also belonged to the same team in the past, so getting them to work together isn't hard. Deepdropx, Green Raza: Green Raza is comprised of a team of friends who love Heroes of the Storm. We entered Horizon Clash Taiwan just to try things out, putting some experiences under our belts. Zei, POSEIDON: POSEIDON is a team of casual gamers that love Blizzard's games. We entered Horizon Clash Taiwan to improve our teamwork and skills. President, Crossover: Our team, Crossover, almost didn't make it, because we only completed our registration 2 minutes before the registration closed after finally found a full team on the last day! We entered Horizon Clash Taiwan to gain some experience and to have fun.   Q: What are your goals in this championship? Virgil, Luna Meow: We want to earn the chance to play abroad and earn more resources, giving our members a chance to shine on the international stage. Hikari, For Second: We play to win. We want to learn from top players from all over the world and assess our level gaps. That way, we can improve our skills to get somewhere in the future. President, Crossover: We participated in HGC, PTT Cup, and Heroes of the Norm Taiwan in the past. They were great experiences. Our team has a motto: "Do your best, but it's just a game." Taking the championship as a way to build our friendship is a good way to go.   Q: As newcomers, what are some of the challenges you faced, and how do you feel after the qualifier rounds? Deepdropx: We really get to see how we're really far behind in terms of skills and teamwork. We think we understand how important teamwork is now. When playing solo, you really only have to worry about yourself, but that's not how tournaments work. If you're able to spot a break in their teamwork, it'll be easy to gank a player, capture mercenaries, or push the line. Zei, POSEIDON: We did okay in the qualifiers, but it also made it clear to us that, rather than trying to copy the team make-up of foreign teams, it's better to just let the teammates use their best heroes.   Q: Horizon Clash's round-robin tournaments are rarely seen in other Hero of the Storm tournaments. How do you feel about it? Virgil, Luna Meow: I feel the tournament is significantly longer because of it. However, if it helps in raising the overall strength of Taiwanese teams, then I'm happy about it. Hikari, For Second: Long tournaments help teams to adapt and adjust, as well as allowing less-experienced team members to get used to the rhythm of the competition. Also, we get to learn what we lack as a team via playing against other teams. It helps us adjust better. President, Crossover: For passionate gamers like us, it doesn't really affect us much. That being said, the competitions are held on weekdays, and for those of us who has a job, it's something we really need to adjust to.   Q: Are there any heroes or line-ups in the tournament worthy of note for you? Virgil, Luna Meow: Things have changed. Now, almost all heroes get their chances to be used. We look at how the Korean teams play, and adjust accordingly based on our own play style. However, copying top teams doesn't always work for us. We have to find our own strengths. Littlewhite, The Avengers: We don't have any particular play style. We just adjust to the situation and the game. I don't have much to add to what has already been talked about regarding the heroes... However, just let me say this: We have a chance to show off a special line-up! Hikari, For Second: Maiev is still very much OP. Anyone who's been through Eastern Clash can tell you how that character can dominate a match. Also, we believe expect Fenix to be really good for his high damage output and mobility. Zei, POSEIDON: Overwatch's heroes, like Genji and Hanzo, have been nerfed multiple times, but they are still popular among the players and on the ban list.   Q: What are your goals or expectations from Horizon Clash? Virgil, Luna Meow: Of course, we'd hope to become top team in Taiwan's regular seasons, defeat the Southeast Asia champion, and enter the mid-season tournament in Sweden. We expect ourselves to perform even better in international tournaments. Lisa, No Soak: We face 7 strong teams in Horizon Clash Taiwan this time. We can only hope to maintain our morale and teamwork in the game. n6333373, Times New Roman: We didn't give ourselves a lot of pressure during the matches and in practices, but we hope to earn high ranks. We also wish HCG's competitiveness and players will be greatly increased after Horizon Clash Taiwan. Littlewhite, The Avengers: Luna Meow poses a big threat to us, so our goal is clear: to beat them! Hikari, For Second: Of course we'd want to win the championship in Taiwan, but simply doing our best is what’s important. Deepdropx, Green Raza: The other teams have more experience than us, so we get to learn a great deal whether we win or lose. We only hope one day we would become professional esport gamers, and make a name for Taiwan in the world of HCG. Zei, POSEIDON: We're worried about Luna Meow, but doing our best in every game against every opponent is good enough for us. We do hope to be among the Top 4, of course. President, Crossover: Starting from the quarter finals, every game is a hard battle for us. However, we hope to do our best in every match. 本次參賽的選手包含 Has、Winter、Nice、Rex、ButAlways、Bistork、ExpecT 和 GogojOey。 Has won 2018 WCS Austin Challenger Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Japan, going to the main event with ExpecT   Eight elite players competed in the one-day event of 2018 WCS Challenger Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Japan to decide the two seeds for 2018 WCS Austin, the main event. The participants of this challenger series include Has, Winter, Nice, Rex, ButAlways, Bistork, ExpecT and GogojOey. Has as a veteran lived up his reputation by knocking out his opponents in a very convincing fashion, and eventually won the challenger playoffs. He and the runner-up ExpecT will show up in WCS Austin!   In the quarterfinals, Has put up a 3-0 clean sweep against Swedish player Winter, and Rex secured his advancement (3-2) to the semifinals from Nice with a great pincer of zerglings and banelings in the last map. Meanwhile, ButAlways ended Bistork’s road to the Austin, and ExpecT barely made it out as his match against GogojOey was a close one which went on to the last map.   The commentators had much confidence in ExpecT’s macro and harassment skills.   In the semifinals, Has soon figured out his opponent’s strategy and responded well, and he took the first finals spot with a dominating 3-0 victory against Rex. ExpecT took hold of the momentum with excellent multi-pronged harassments which was a disaster for ButAlways, this included widow mine drops at two bases for massive probe thinning followed by a final decisive push. He advanced to the finals spot by sweeping the series 3-0.   Has made it to the finals without much difficulty.   In the finals, ExpecT started strong: he utilized his extraordinary middle macro, took advantage from Has’ huge maneuver mistake, and turned his third base into rubble with a flood of marauders, marines, liberators and widow mines.   Unshaken by the loss, Has secured huge early advantage in the four maps by keeping ExpecT’s main force busy, while expanding his own economy. He eventually took down ExpecT 4-1 with even better maneuver and aggression, and won the WCS Challenger Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Japan. He is a champion of Protoss glory and pride!   If you missed out the live event, you can still watch the VOD here!     For more information about WCS, visit StarCraft II World Champion Series (WCS) Taiwan, Blizzard Esports (Taiwan), StarCraft official fanpage (@StarCraftZHTW) and Blizzard Esports fanpage (@BlizzardEsportsTW).

The first week of playoffs are sure to provide impactful and decisive plays—which squad will stand out as the best of the best?     About the Quarterfinalists   The 12 squads of OWCP were arranged into two groups, A and B, and the top 4 squads of each group have advanced into the playoffs, which start this week. In Group A, new Korean team Detonator KR, Hong Kong Attitude from Hong Kong, Machi Esports from Taiwan, and Talon Esports from Korea secured the coveted spots.     Detonator KR, a well-known all-Korean professional gaming team and the winner of Overwatch Open Division, dominated the regular season with 4-0, and fell one map shy of a full-season clean sweep. Hong Kong Attitude were the lucky ones.     Pacific region veterans Hong Kong Attitude showed much improvement following lineup adjustments in this season, and are currently positioned as the second seed of the group.     Another Pacific veteran team, Machi Esports grabbed the chance to challenge for the title under the lead of Kao “Kant” Wei-Tang, with back-up from Korean members JUDO and Schwi.     Another all-Korean team, Talon Esports secured a spot from Group A. As the fourth team in the group, we look forward to seeing what they’ve learned from the regular season to improve their strategy in the playoffs.      Meanwhile, Group B was far more unpredictable, with everything undecided until the last moment. The four rosters that came out on top were Blank Esports from Australia, MEGA from Thailand, Xavier Esports from Thailand, and LOGITECHG BANG from Taiwan.     Blank Esports, from Down Under, retained their power and popularity in the Pacific region even after their roster overhaul, and they’re seeking the OWCP title by finishing as the first seed in their group.     The passionate Thai squad of MEGA has formed a closer bond with coach oPuTo, and have completed the season as the runner-up of Group B. They are certain to put on a great show in the playoffs.     Continuing the Thai team theme, Xavier promises to bring more joy to the playoffs. While the analysts label them as a “high synergy team with stable strategy implementations”, they will face the challenge of a faster-paced game. The burden lays with their two DPS players, Azalea and Sonntag, to help the roster achieve success.     LOGITECHG ABANG has made an impression on fans with the superb combo plays of DPS players’ Blue and Won. Will they be able to defend themselves in the fierce environment of playoffs?     Playoffs Schedule   The two-week OWCP Season 1 Playoffs will go live on Thursday, April 26. The Imperishable Flame of Heroes - GarnetDevil   For you who have been in the Taiwanese eSports community for years, GarnetDevil is surely a well-known figure. He went all quiet after leaving another MOBA, later he went on a new voyage in the Storm.   “You have to know where you are and what you are, otherwise you know not where to go and what to do.”   His response was rather modest and intuitive, and did not address much of his previous effort and struggle, as well as pride and frustration, although he does long for a definitive accomplishment. These seemingly conflicting traits, however, refined GarnetDevil into a magnificent gem.   He’s about to shine bright on a new stage.       “Seeking the New Horizon”   GarnetDevil was released by ahq eSports (ahq) in 2015, and then rejoined its Storm team at the end of the year.   “I gave everything a shot after becoming the free agent. Heroes of the Storm is pretty good, so I played more.”   Returning for competitive Heroes of the Storm (HotS) means starting from scratch again although he had competed in the international events of another MOBA game - many fundamental elements are so different and have to be learned and mastered.   HotS is more focused on a variety of map objectives, giving more complexity in team comp and strategic flexibility. To him, HotS is a heavily teamwork-based game with faster progression, “In this game, interaction and synergy is the key to victory, and I had to practice a lot to adapt and eventually master.”   Questions were raised for his transition to another game, and he had to answer with the best of his performance from repeated practice. He wants more than that. He wants to be on the big stage. “Then I wanted to get even better, I mean more than playing for fun. That’s when I made up my mind to look for a team for training and professional competition.”   In December 2015, GarnetDevil made his debut in the Gold Series League 2015 Season 2. In this event, ahq made the struggle against the runner-up-to-be Zero Gaming in the Quarterfinals, and 2015 HGC champion Cloud 9 in Loser’s Bracket 1.   The opponents looked intimidating, and yet ahq showed no hesitation. Their fast pacing, frequent engagements and unexpected objective acquisition astonished the commentators. It was when ahq given the nickname of “the Fighters” for their toughness and longing for fights.     Both teams took a map. In Sky Temple ahq caught Cloud9 on their way to the boss and won a decisive fight. “Could you believe that?” The commentators gasped at the terrific plays. It seemed cheerful for ahq with the 2-1 lead but Cloud9 soon recollected themselves and won the series by storming down Blackhearts Bay and the Tomb of the Spider Queen.   “I thought ahq would win. What a shame...” Chakey, the ahq coach at the time, said with frustration, although more than two years have passed, “We gained confidence when we got the lead. Unfortunately, we didn’t push further in the next maps, and there were flaws in the bans and picks of the last map...well, whatever...” He decided to hold it because regret practically helps nothing.   ahq lost 2-3 to Cloud9 and this was the end of the Fighters’ show in the Gold Series League. In early 2016, he left ahq and competed in 2016 HGC Spring Championship Taiwan Regional with his new team Team AW. Taking on the enormous stress and previous teammates, the new team lost 0-3 to the Taiwanese all-star GIA, and soon the team disbanded.         “Refinement”   Leaving Team AW does not mark the end of his eSports career, but GarnetDevil went silent in the first half of 2016, then created Team Face Check (TFC) at the end of the year. The creation of TFC was full of challenges, as GarnetDevil put it, “for an amateur team, it is very difficult to find teammates with desirable skills and synergy, and most importantly, the time for training and scrims.”   With several months of training and adaptation, TFC seized the Seasons 1 and 3 titles of HGC Taiwan Regionals, and won a spot for HGC Eastern Clash. Once again GarnetDevil the refined gem shone on the international stage.     They managed to make international appearance, but new challenges waited them: GarnetDevil soon learned the power gap as the amateurs cannot afford to put all efforts on preparing the tournaments, which is natural for pro gamers.   “I know our preparation was way too less than the pro teams from other regions, and it is too much of a problem to be solved in a short time.” Participated Eastern Clash twice, GarnetDevil described their goal to be putting up their best performance so that there would be no regret. “When I was a pro, I had to stay in the dormitory all day for twenty six or seven days a month, and it is not the case now.”   Facing the elites from other nations, Team Face Check had to play to their best from the first match. Every team has their own dream, but there will only be one winner. Compared to the pro teams backed by abundant resources in terms of funds and time, the members of Team Face Check attended practice and scrims on little time available. However, their squad fearlessly took on the major powers, and it’s the passion and desire to find glory as the Taiwan team that drove them forward.     The Quarterfinals of 2017 HGC Phase #2 Eastern Clash started with TFC against Super Perfect Team (SPT), the first China seed. TFC knocked their opponent to the Loser’s Bracket 2-0 by seizing the first map Braxis Hideout in a convincing fashion, and continuing the momentum to take down the opponent’s core after a decisive team fight.   GarnetDevil did not freak out at the victory on the China team he looked upon; instead, he took it as natural.   “It might be I’ve been in many tournaments. It was everything to me, but it isn’t now.” He no longer puts everything into pro gaming, “Now I know what I’m looking for.”   Later TFC took on the winner L5 and another China seed Chall Enge and finished fifth, just one step away from getting into top four.   GarnetDevil seemed satisfied for the result, but he’s still longing for something.   “I make a goal for myself: to compete at BlizzCon.” GarnetDevil said slowly, “So many have left, but I will fight on...until I make the appearance on the BlizzCon stage.”       New Hope   In 2017 HGC Taiwan Season 4, which decides the Taiwanese seed for HGC main event at BlizzCon, TFC came head-to-head with Soul Torturer (ST).     To GarnetDevil, Soul Torturer is the nemesis in domestic tournaments. He would not give in without a struggle.   In the first map, Tomb of the Spider Queen, TFC started strong but a fatal mistake at 23 minutes ended in a team wipe and loss as both teams were beyond level 20. ST then dominated Sky Temple and the third map to seize the Taiwan seed of the year with a 3-0 sweep.   “We had different thoughts and plans, so the team was disbanded.” GarnetDevil was one step away from his goal in 2017, and he decided to continue pursuing his goal.   In 2018, he made up his mind for a fresh start.   “I knew ktfor for a long time. He was in ahq Fighters and later I invited him to come along. We lived in the same dormitory because we trained together, and we became good friends.“ He later joined LM with ktfor. LM is a team of experienced HotS players, including the members from other teams.     GarnetDevil showed strong mentality despite considered as the underdog in the match against Soul Torturer, and put up the huge upset to win the qualifier.   “In the first match sending us to the Loser’s Round, we tried the planned model and it didn’t quite work out.” GarnetDevil said, “At Grand Finals, we decided to do whatever we are capable of, and it worked.”       Ups and Downs   There is a saying, “Life is like a box of chocolate, you will never know what you gonna take.” His competitive experience is like lemon, it is sour and bitter entwined with slight sweetness. It is definitely not something to stand out in a feast, but a good chef can make something nice out of it with proper preparation.   Life is hard and full of competition, but you’ll never find the oasis if you don’t start the journey. Now 29, GarnetDevil started playing HotS from beta and have been in its competitive community for 3 years. He expects more opportunities to come.   “Experienced players like me would like a larger local tournament, that is, a proper stage to fight on. I don’t really care about others but to put up our best performance.”   GarnetDevil experienced ups and downs in his career, but he chose to look forward instead of looking back. How to make the dream come true? What to do when I really make it? What if I fail? Are these really what I can get? Questions appear and echo in his head, but GarnetDevil always keeps his cool and gets prepared to shock the world.     When 2018 HGC Eastern Clash was around the corner, GarnetDevil visited Blizzard Arena Taipei very often. He practices not only in the practice room, but the demo area around the stage, and even on the stage. He will not leave until arena closes.   “In fact, I’m not the lighthouse of the team nor am I suitable for it. I will make use of anything at hand for the best result.”   LM tried to hold Tempest’s intense assault in the Towers of Doom but eventually lost 0-2 and dropped to the Loser's Round. However, as they stated, they “will put up the struggle against the China seeds” and quite lived up the statement, even driving the crowd wild in the match against TheOne.     In this tournament, the Tombs of the Spider Queen is a map full of surprises. In fact, HotS matches are so exciting that you’re not sure of the result until the last moment!   TheOne was slightly ahead in level, but ktfor took the chance to engage and pick out Leoric, then the squishies. The crowd went wild at LM’s team wipe at the middle of the map, and Chakey on the audience seat couldn’t hide his excitement, “The core! Push to the core!”   LM grouped up at the bottom then push in through the middle lane. TheOne's member resurrect and take down GarnetDevil first, then booy005. The core starts to collapse, and every second matters! The core HP goes down from 45%, 40%, 39%, then 35%...   It stopped at 13%. TheOne managed to hold off the core smashers, and the crowd roared in excitement, maybe with more astonishment. LM was unable to retain the momentum in Sky Temple, but it was when they became known for their potential.     Stood in a rather formal way on the stage, and showered by the blue light and the crowd in fever, they found it somehow satisfying.   “This shows we have a chance to take down China teams, and even other non-Korean teams.” GarnetDevil said with frustration and this is his version of “I’ll be back”. With Eastern Clash settled, he’ll prepare for the next premier, the Horizon Clash.   The Horizon Clash will differ from previous tournaments by applying round-robin tournament format and including teams from Southeast Asia. More possibilities are to come. LM, receiving a bye to the Ro8 in Taiwan qualifier, will bravely take on the new challenge, and this is exactly what GarnetDevil has been looking for: the chance to earn the spot of global event like Mid-Season Brawl.   “My goal is to win the Taiwan qualifier, and take down the Southeast Asia opponent to secure the spot!” GarnetDevil’s dream is still vivid and guides him the way, and with the experience in the Eastern Clash, he and his LM teammates look forward to dominate the Horizon and beyond.

Where everything started - An interview with Lilgho   While deep in thought, Lilgho has a habit to frown slightly, expressing a rather serious look while looking upwards to somewhere far away.   “What is Overwatch to me? Well... it’s what I do every day... actually, it’s the center of my life.”   he redirected his gaze and said with a slight grin. From Lilgho, we can honestly see how an eSport competitor worked his way to become a game commentator while moving from Taipei to Shanghai, impressing numerous viewers with his solid eSports skills and no-nonsense honesty. This was how Lilgho described himself:   “Yeah, I’m actually addicted to Overwatch.”       Players and competitors   After a lengthy closed beta test (CBT), Overwatch was finally released in mid-2016. The game combined the elements of first-person shooters (FPS) and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) elements, making it a brave new attempt for its time.   Lilgho often joked that he is not a typical FPS competitor because of specific reasons. “I prefer the MOBA elements more than the FPS. Overwatch managed to incorporate, with great ingenuity, MOBA elements within various game mechanics. No other game does it better than Overwatch in this aspect.”   When talking about how the game got started in Taiwan, many eSports viewers will intuitively think about Dingyue Sidian Jiujiu Mei (a wordplay of Subscribe for 4.99 dollars, or $4.99), a team formed by Lilgho and his band of play mates. The team quickly made a name for themselves shortly after Overwatch was officially released and managed to gain a large audience for their live streams as well as opportunities to participate in eSports events. The 2016 Overwatch Taiwan VS Japan friendly games allowed the team to establish a strong foundation for competitive Overwatch gaming in Taiwan.   “I actually quite miss the Taiwan VS Japan games.”   Lilgho narrowed his eyes and looked above. “At that time, I was driven by the desire to win. I felt really strongly about beating the other side. We actually quite respected the Japanese team as our opponent, and since we represented Taiwan in the eSports event, I really wanted my share of the glory.”   You reap what you sow. This is the basis for Lilgho’s confidence. Taiwan's team managed to defeat Detonator with a 5:3 victory, quickly transforming Overwatch into the hottest topic in Taiwanese eSports.     $4.99 made extensive preparations to participate in this intensive battle, and actively participated in various team training and competitions for nearly six months. For the shift from $4.99 to ahQ S, the intent for setting up the team was, in fact, rather straight forward.   “In addition to helping friends who have always been playing with us gain some actual team-based eSports experience, I really hoped that the team can become a major driving force for developing Overwatch.”   From what Lilgho said, many of these friends soon became eSports veterans. The critical issue back then was to make Overwatch more popular and to train a large team of skilled athletes. “It doesn’t matter if it's $4.99 or ahQ S. I never regarded them as a professional team. We played for fun and once a better team emerges, we will transfer all resources over and invest in the young bloods instead.”   This is why Lilgho regarded his early days with Overwatch with great nostalgia. It was like watching an infant growing up and learning to speak its first words. Although $4.99 remained active in the eSports scene and participated in the Overwatch Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Open 2016 and the Overwatch World Cup 2016, Lilgho said: “It’s time for us to back down.”     During the Overwatch Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Open 2016, StayFrosty, a team with renowned players such as KMoMo, Baconjack, and S1nkler managed to defeat the hot favorite $4.99 and seized the champion's trophy. Lilgho, however, was happy to see this. The Taiwan Hong Kong and Macao Open did not let him down and proved to be the perfect crucible in which strong, young teams were forged.   “Prior to the games, I said that it’s definitely not a good thing if we defended our championship. The emergence of younger, better teams really made me happy,” Lilgho said, “Losing is an everyday thing, and it’s a good thing, too.”   Jiujiu Mei never actually left, but after enjoying a year of glory as a team in 2016, $4.99 quietly disappeared from the eSports platform. The spotlight of the eSports arena should be directed towards emerging heroes from across the world. $4.99 had its moments and it was a great thing that the team departed from the stage with grace.   “We're not athletes. I even think that we’re not a proper team.” Lilgho said as his words trailed into a somber tone. “I’m not a great athlete myself. I cannot stand the life of true athletes. I hate being managed... so, right, I am not the best role model out there.”       Reasons for resilience   The Overwatch World Cup 2016 became the final battle under the spotlight for several members of $4.99. Lilgho, who had already thought about quitting, carried his usual pride and confidence. “I don’t really agree with the voting system, but I believe that I was selected because it was my time, and I believe I will be able to do my best for my team.”   Thus, six players, Niebao, Danny, Zonda, LazyTitan, EDIBOSS, and Lilgho, came together to enter the first Overwatch World Cup as a team. Despite facing 16 elite squads selected from across the world, everyone was there for the first time so players did what they could to gage each other’s strengths and weaknesses.   “I have traveled overseas many times and was mentally prepared for this and know that sometimes competitions could be really hard to win... so I often prepared myself psychologically prior to departure.” Lilgho said, “But truth be told, I was quite sad about that World Cup... it was quite sour for me.”   The Taiwanese team arrived in the United States 2 weeks before the game. During this time, the competing teams staged numerous matches against each other to assess the skills of their potential opponents. Although the Taiwanese team did not achieve a high ranking in the 2016 World Cup, it gave an impressive performance that astonished many teams.   The Taiwanese team was eventually defeated during the group stage, but the competition was a shocking and growing experience for Lilgho, and it wasn’t just the games itself. Given his interest in how squads were trained and managed, Lilgho quietly stood by and observed the Korean team carefully.   “I felt that Korean teams play well for a reason, and it wasn’t surprising when they won the World Cup. I won’t talk about how they won. Instead, I've always been focused on the elements that allow them to play as they did.” Lilgho described. “Speaking of which, there’s a short tale that impressed me...”   To prepare for the World Cup, every team played matches against each other to size each other up. During one of these practice games, Lilgho studied zunba, the tank of the Korean team and a renowned star athlete in Korea with impressive skills. zunba played Zarya in that game and demolished the opposing team, helping to achieve a team victory.   When the training ended, the coach and supervisor came to the training room and reprimanded zunba. Miro, the other tank for the team, was not involved in the incident but he stood nearby to listen. Lilgho was extremely curious about this, studying the video footage of the incident and even asking someone to translate what they said to get to the bottom of this. It turned out that zunba mistakenly used a Projected Barrier (E) during team practice. This small mistake got zunba and Miro a 15-minute censure.   “That was very shocking for me, but it revealed to me the attitude and approach that allowed the Korean team to dominate.” Lilgho went on to describe Miro. Despite being a renowned star athlete, Miro did not falter in his routine training. As a Reinhardt player, Miro trained hard and watched videos when he was not training. All the videos he watched were related to Reinhardt.   Having gone beyond an athlete’s role, Lilgho hopes that his observations and analysis can benefit the Overwatch community and offer more excitement. “I believe that the reason why Miro stood by to listen to zunba getting chewed out was that he wanted to better understand the details of double tanking. Such behavior made me realize that it is quite impossible for this team to lose...”       All-new Challenge   Now that his Overwatch athlete career has ended, Lilgho began giving match commentaries in late 2016. He started with the Los Muertos Cup, patiently trying again and again until Zhanqi decided to host the Overwatch Team Story (OTS). Motivated by the opportunity to provide commentaries for more gaming events, Lilgho agreed to the contract, starting a new partnership where he offered game commentaries in Shanghai.   “The only thing I want to do is to provide commentaries.” Lilgho gaze hardened as he slightly raised his chin. “It was like that since the very beginning. From ten years ago till now, all I want to do is to give game commentaries.”   To Lilgho, giving commentaries is like dissecting the entire game. The essential feature of effective commentary is to reveal, using layman’s terms, the art and skill of the gamers in the competition, and to spice-up the exciting moments of the game.  The allure of improving the entertainment value of a match proved irresistible. Lilgho is extremely passionate and tireless about his role.   Lilgho hardly had any considerations regarding this offer. He embarked on this journey to pursue his dreams, and even convinced Danny, former $4.99 team mate, to accompany him as well. Lilgho also betrayed a slight grin when he described a secret one-on-one training that lasted a week to make up for Danny's relative inexperience.   “I always felt tense whenever I take the commentator’s mike. I was like that from the very beginning. It still felt the same right now.” After working away from his home for more than a year, Lilgho’s intents have not swayed when it comes to eSports and providing commentaries. “I never felt that game commentary was an easy thing to do. I always want to give my best shot for every game.”   Lilgho maintained a serious approach and great respect for every match, regardless of scale, and covered games from the Overwatch Premier Series (OWPC) 2017, the APAC Premier 2017, and the Overwatch League (OWL). He enjoyed the OWPS regional tournaments where players fought against each other while honing their skills as well as APAC matches where teams from different countries engaged in exciting slugfests. Lilgho’s could hardly contain his joy when he gained the opportunity to cover the OWL games.   “OWL is the game closest to my ideals.” Having been in touch with the people committed to making OWL happen and gaining behind-the-scenes knowledge that many viewers have little understanding of, Lilgho described the OWL games as: “The goal of Blizzard. It is extremely courageous in my opinion and designed to transform eSports into a traditional sports event. OWL represents a whole-new concept and an adventure in its own right.”   Lilgho used the NBA games as an analogy for OWL. NBA matches are exciting, but not everyone in the audience plays the sport. The audience could approach the game event from different dimensions that range from peripheral features such as jerseys and cheerleaders to the teams and athletes themselves. OWL includes numerous breakthroughs in multiple dimensions, including the release of team outfits and designs, improvements to the spectator system, and creating the Path to Pro system, easily convincing Lilgho to acknowledge the value of OWL.   “OWL is more than just a large-scale eSports event. It is a sport.” Lilgho nodded and affirmed his conclusion after thinking about it for a moment.   The adventure is on, and Lilgho has thrown himself into it without a second thought. Transforming eSports into an actual sport is a dream, both to the game commentators and to Lilgho himself. To Lilgho, becoming a sports commentator is the highest form of glory and accolade of his dreams.   “To be honest, it can also be a difficult and poorly appreciated role. It’s a very big challenge.” Lilgho expressed, “But I hope that the games will get more exciting and attract more viewers. Some people may not play the game themselves, but they could still watch it, and in doing so prove that the game offers value and excitement for the audience.”     OWL is now sweeping across the world. Unlike Taiwanese players who regard Overwatch as having had its days or believe that OWL is going to doom Overwatch, Lilgho’s vision has remained positive and supportive of this destructive innovation, quoting the famous saying: “This is the best of times. This is the worst of times.”   “I believe OWL is performing better than expected.” Lilgho thought about it for a while before giving his two cents. “I am really enamored by the game. Although there are still some minor differences from what I expect, I would not say that Overwatch has had its times. We’re in a time where new games are replacing gold ones every day. Everyone is outdated to some extent.”   Lilgho’s charm comes from his ability to identify the key issue and reveal it with all honesty. He then explained: “During the window period before the official launching of OWL and before the Path to Pro was finalized, it was natural for many teams or players to leave. But some really good players chose to stay, and lower-tier tournaments have begun to inject fresh young blood into OWL while more and more people began watching the games. This is an important factor for transforming OWL into a traditional competitive sports event.”   The OWL system is gradually being finalized, but some conclusions remain rather uncertain. The expectations that Lilgho mentioned were related to the domineering prowess of the Korean team. Although teams were based upon cities, all-Korean teams still demonstrated significantly better performance and consistency. Nevertheless, Lilgho remained optimistic when it comes to athlete potential and team quality, comparing it to the probationary period where new employees are allowed to settle into their new roles.   “I was really moved and felt that OWL offered a fantastic environment. People can definitely improve under such a system.” Lilgho’s signature grin appeared once more. “When I saw OWL, I thought to myself, man, if only I were 10 years younger. That would have been great.”       Looking towards the zenith     Lilgho jokingly remarked: “You’ll never run out of words with the commentator’s mike.” As a fervent fan of Overwatch and game matches, Lilgho could draw from an endless pool of energy and ideas. One year may have passed by quickly, but there were so many stories that people could talk about.   “Actually, this is my first time staying in Shanghai for that long. At times, I felt somewhat isolated and helpless.” Lilgho offered his thanks to his partners, friends, and audiences. “A lot of people have given me continuous support and encouragement from the very beginning. I shouldn’t say I’m surprised about the responses I’ve received during this time. I should say thank you. This thankfulness has only grown during this one-year period. I really hope to repay those who have supported me all this while.”   Having accompanied Overwatch and pursued his dreams through the game, Lilgho has finally reached the highest levels of achievement that he had aimed for. His dark gaze is still filled with boundless warmth, energy, and determination to push forward.   “I will give my best and see Overwatch eSports ascend to heights that you and I could barely imagine!”

ANNOUNCING THE 2018 OVERWATCH WORLD CUP     Two years ago, we debuted the Overwatch World Cup, and 2017 saw it evolve and expand further. Now it’s time to announce the return of this global celebration of high-level play: the 2018 Overwatch World Cup, which culminates this November in Southern California. Here are all the details for how to get involved.   Qualification: From today through the end of Competitive Season 9 (April 28), we’ll be tracking the average skill rating (SR) of each country’s top 150 players. Each country’s progress can be tracked on the Overwatch World Cup website. The top 20 countries at the end of this period will be invited to compete in the 2018 Overwatch World Cup.   This year, the four Group Stage host countries will be France, South Korea, Thailand, and the United States. These countries will automatically qualify into the tournament, resulting in a total of 24 teams. If a host country makes the top 20 through average SR, the 21st-ranked country will take their spot—and so on.   Committees: This year, we are changing how qualified countries’ National Competition Committees are formed. Each will be comprised of three people: a GM, a coach, and a community lead.* Members will be compensated for their time and effort, along with travel and accommodations required to support their teams during the Group Stages and Finals. These committees will be built via the following process, across Phase 1 (May 1–14) and Phase 2 (May 17–29).     GM: GMs will be selected by Blizzard. Applications will be accepted, but we also will scour each country for qualified individuals, whether players, talent, or community members. (Application links for all three positions will be provided at a later date.)   Coach: Phase 1: Any player with an account in good standing may apply for their national team’s coach position. Candidates will be provided with a custom URL to share, which will allow the top 150 players (by SR) from the candidate’s country of residence to endorse one candidate. Phase 2: We reveal the top three candidates per country, and hold a second, runoff vote, again among the top 150 players. Each player may vote once.   Community Lead: Phase 1: This will follow the same process as coach selection, but voting is open to the country’s entire player base. Players may vote for multiple community leads. Phase 2: We reveal each country’s top 10 candidates, and players cast one final vote.   Full National Competition Committees will be revealed on May 31!   Players: Committees will hold tryouts from June 1 through July 5. Players—including Overwatch League members!—can compete for a spot on the team of their country of citizenship. Committees will submit rosters, which may contain up to 12 players, from June 15 through July 5. * Blizzard will work with the players and committees to identify seven players from each roster who will travel to applicable live events.   Follow @PlayOverwatch for our next update, when we open Phase 1 voting. For now, heroes, hit that Competitive Play card: through the end of the Competitive Season, you’re fighting for your country!   * All committee members and players are subject to approval by Blizzard.

Famous player AKTM joins YOSHIMOTO ENCOUNT, aiming for semi-final!   Previously known as Akihabara ENCOUNT, YOSHIMOTO ENCOUNT is the only Japan team advances to Overwatch Contenders Pacific, OWCP. The team has changed its name to YOSHIMOTO ENCOUNT under the sponsorship of famous talent agency YOSHIMOTO KOGYO They have striven very hard in Overwatch tournaments in Japan for a long time and fully ready for this season of OWCP.     As they have been well-prepared, team manager Hikari says, “There are many competitive rivals in this season, so we reinforce the team by recruiting new players. We hope to prove our abilities and get a ticket to semi-final!” In addition to Bep, also called “Brain of the Team”, and Sa1nt, a flex role player with excellent gaming knowledge, AKTM is the ace Japan holds in palm and YOSHIMOTO ENCOUNT most proud of. Shining brightly in 2017 Overwatch World Cup, DPS player AKTM led his team to fight through group stage, stunned the audience around the globe by defeating all Europe enemies that were highly evaluated at that moment.     AKTM Profile - Name: Akihiro Kushida (櫛田明弘) - Date of Birth: 1991/12/28 - Main Heroes: McCree, Genji, Soldier: 76   During recent practice, YOSHIMOTO ENCOUNT is conscious that every play should be taken seriously when encountered their competent opponents. Despite high pressure challenges, Team Manager Hikari says positively, “Every match is very important to us. We regard Detonator KR as the strongest rival, but the ultimate goal is to do our best and enjoy every game we fight in OWCP. New Korean team Talon Esports reveals roster and has grand ambition to win OWCP!   Ever since Talon Esports declared to join Overwatch Contenders Pacific, OWCP, they have been very mysterious. As date getting close, Talon Esports announces a roster consists of only Korean players. We feel an increased tension at OWCP while the mystery unveiled as Talon Esports should not be taken lightly. Cofounder of the team Sean laughs heartily, "Thank you everyone for your attention. We will endeavor to reach the championship!"   The community may be curious about the motivation and process of Talon Esports reforming a team to fight in Overwatch Pacific region. Sean shares that during Overwatch Pacific Championship season 2 in 2017, they had fruitful conversation with the victory team Ardeont. "After much efforts, a cohesive and competitive team was finally founded. We are much appreciated for Ardeont's assistance and guidance!"   Technically, we wouldn't say Talon Esports' players have prominent experience, but each of them does obtain solid skills. Some have sports background, such as handball or softball. These trainings also allow them to maintain stability and develop mature mindset when encountered high pressure challenges. According to the team, main tank BUTEUK is their cheerleader, who reinforces and inspires them. No matter what the situation is in game, he is able to raise morale, leading the team to keep fighting.     Speaking of goal at OWCP, Sean laughs, "We will definitely aim for the throne! “Unity is victory” is Talon Esports' creed, and we will present a team with high perseverance as well as great teamwork that we are proud of!" Taking over the first seed from Ardeont, whether or not Talon Esports will be as sensational as the previous warrior is definitely a spotlight in this season of OWCP.   For more information, please tune into Overwatch Contenders Official Website, Blizzard Esports Official Website, Overwatch Official Fanpage, and Blizzard Esports Fanpage.
